Meet the 2021 Sanire council members and hear their messages.
Lelanie Van Zyl Prinsloo, a pioneer for woman in mining, passed away on 10/08/2021 at the age of 54.
Lelanie was born on 14 December 1966 in Kwazulu-Natal. She spent her childhood moving often and growing up in various towns (including Greenside Village), as her father was in the mining industry. She attended Clewer Primary School in Witbank. She matriculated from Secunda High School in Mpumalanga in 1984. She started working at Sasol Mining Twistdraai East Shaft as a Geological Assistant in the Geology Department in September 1997. She enrolled at UNISA and completed her BSc in Archeology, receiving the prize as best student from the university upon her graduation. After completing her initial degree there was no stopping this young and ambitious woman. She was to become one of the best female Rock Engineers in the country.
She completed the following qualifications during her career, it is important to mention that all her qualifications were completed part time while working:
During her career she was appointed in different roles at the following companies:
She served on the SANIRE coal branch committee as well as moderator for both Paper 3.2 and the Rock Engineering Certificate practical examination.
Lelanie is survived by her children, Rosseau (36) and Lanriëlle Prinsloo (35), grandchildren, Conin Schoeman (9) Elrin (7) and Renelle Prinsloo (4), Son-in-law Pieter Schoeman (37) and Daughter-in-law Elmarie Prinsloo (34).

She will be missed dearly.

The first ever SANIRE virtual RockBowl 2021 was held on Thursday, 5 August 2021 as part of the SANIRE symposium proceedings. There were 7 groups competing against each other and Team Schists from Petra Diamonds won the competition after three rounds of rock engineering related questions. It was great fun and we are hoping for an even better attendance in next year’s RockBowl 2022. Thank you to all the teams who participated!

This two-lecture series is mainly aimed at SA rock mechanics practitioners, but it may be of general interest.

Please note that the Strata Control and Rock Engineering Practical examinations for the second half of 2021 are now open.
Registration for the Strata Control Practical will close on the 31st August 2021. Examinations are planned to be hosted during September and October 2021 for the Strata Control Practical.
Registration for the Rock Engineering Practical will close on the 4th October 2021. Examinations are planned to be hosted early November 2021 for the Rock Engineering Practical.
Please register for the practical examinations via the SANIRE website and ensure that you submit the required documents accordingly within the required timeframe.
Please note that Rofhiwa Phadagi and Kevin Le Bron will now be responsible for the Strata Control Practical and Rock Engineering Practical Examinations on behalf of SANIRE Council, respectively. I would like to welcome both members to SANIRE Council and wish them success in their Education roles.
In terms of the theory examinations, please ensure that you register via the COMCERT website (www.comcert.co.za). Please note that registration closes on the 31st August 2021. Theory exam dates are as follows:
