The ACG undertakes research, education and training activities in the geomechanics disciplines to provide industry with the necessary tools and knowledge to ensure that safety is not simply a top priority on par with productivity, but rather an ethic that guides everything.

The Council for Geoscience
The Council for Geoscience (CGS) is one of the National Science Councils of South Africa and is the legal successor of the Geological Survey of South Africa, which was formed in 1912 by the amalgamation of 3 former Surveys, the oldest of which - the Geological Commission of the Cape of Good Hope - was founded in 1895. The Geoscience Act, Act 100 of 1993, established the CGS in its present form. Today, the Council is a modern institution, boasting excellent facilities and expertise, ranking among the best in Africa.

The World Stress Map (WSM) is the global compilation of information on the present-day stress field of the Earth's crust with 21,750 stress data records in its current WSM database release 2008. It is a collaborative project between academia, industry and government that aims to characterize the stress patterns and to understand the stress sources.
