Mechanica Saxorum, Latin for "the mechanics of rocks" reminds us of the early origins of our field Rock Mechanics. According to literature, the first development of actual mining sciences like rock mechanics in early France dates back to the 15 hundreds. In South Africa, the birth and growth of rock mechanics as an applied science can be directly linked to the demands of problems encountered in the early 19 hundreds arising from mining at ever increasing depth.
Your 2012 SANIRE Symposium aims to reflect back on where South African rock mechanics has come from and to where we would like to see it grow in generations to come. Click here to download the registration form.
