SANIRE's history The Institute's history dates back to 1966, when a small group of South African rock mechanics enthusiasts met to form an International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) interest group. The South African National Group on Rock Mechanics (SANGORM) was formally constituted in 1969 with a membership of six. The secretariat was initially based at the CSIR in Pretoria, but was moved to the Chamber of Mines Research Organisation in 1978. The formation of regional branches began in 1981 and today there are five active regional branches; Gauteng, North West, Bushveld, Free State and Coalfields. To improve communication and information on developments in the field of rock mechanics, publishing of a newsletter commenced in 1986. As the size and activities of the National Group grew, a new constitution and code of conduct was drawn up and adopted in 1987. SANGORM has played an important role in the activities of its parent body, the ISRM, with various members of the National Group serving on the board of the ISRM and on different working groups. By 1988 SANGORM was the third largest ISRM National Group, with a membership of 380. The National Group's major technical activity in latter years has been the organisation of annual symposia with international speakers, to promote the interchange of developments in rock mechanics theory and application.During the late 1990s it became apparent to the SANGORM council that in view of certain proposed legislative changes, the interests of its members would be better served by the formation of professional institute. A census was conducted among SANGORM members, with the overwhelming majority voting in favour of the change. A new constitution was drawn up and the South African National Institute of Rock Engineering (SANIRE) was born. Why should YOU join SANIRE?
